TechTuesday #18 “MarketingMachine Part 4″

by C. Spencer Reynolds on April 20, 2010

VIDEO it is the way business is moving, so be on the wave not left behind. Today on TechTuesday #18 we are on Part 4 of 5 of the MarketingMachine and we will call it simply… “Video”!

We start with cameras, and we talk about 3 different cameras:

  1. Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera (Black) $179
  2. Flip UltraHD Camcorder, 120 Minutes (Black) $199
  3. Canon VIXIA HF S100 HD Flash Memory Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom $699

I like the Kodak Zi8 in a BIG way because it is $179 and you can put in an external mic!  The Flip is great as a backup but not for a main camera and the Canon is SWEET if you want to spend $699!  Frankly I would buy 2 Kodak Zi8 camera and some cool mic options and still be less.

Next, let’s talk about the mic options:

  1. Audio Technica ATR-3350 Lavalier $25
  2. Audio Technica ATR-6550 Shotgun Microphone $50
  3. Nady Wireless Camcorder System with Lavalier Mic $79

The video editing options we talk about in this show are as follows (in order of appearance):

  1. FlipShare (comes pre-installed on every Flip Camcorder)
  2. Animoto
  3. iMovie (come pre-installed on every Mac)
  4. ScreenFlow (the best screen capture software for Mac + video layering!)
  5. BoinxTV (the studio that does it all LIVE!)

Next week we will complete the final 3 pieces of the VIDEO section on the MarketingMachine!  Those include Converting, Embedding and Tracking your videos.  Watch for them next week as we finish the video and talk about List Building Techniques!!!

TechTuesday #16 “MarketingMachine Part 2″

by C. Spencer Reynolds on April 6, 2010

Part 2 – Lead Capture Pages (WordPress & Facebook)

In Part 2 we talk about setting up Lead Capture Pages in both our WordPress Blog and our Facebook Fan Page. One of the most important things we need and DO NOT GET from our Facebook Fan Pages is a way to contact people who have become Fans of our Page. So we might get hundreds of people who are fans, but we cannot contact them directly via email or any other method. So we are going to put up a little web form that will ask for their Name and Email address so we can really keep in touch and utilize some KILLER email marketing campaigns that we will talk about in MarketingMachine Part 3.

We will be using http://developers.facebook.com web site to get some code and helps and a bunch of your WordPress admin section.

TechTuesday #15 “MarketingMachine Part 1″

by C. Spencer Reynolds on March 30, 2010

Today we started the MarketingMachine!!!  We are going to be working for 5 consecutive weeks building your MarketingMachine step-by-step (click-by-click) until it is installed and working in your business.  So as we start our first or five MarketingMachine episodes let’s get our self-hosted WordPress blog installed and working…

You will want to have a hosting account (I use HostMonster and think they ROCK) so that you can have your main hub for the machine.  Watch the video to see the steps for creating your new blog.

Next we want to get a really functional THEME for our blog.  There are literally thousands of themes you can use and after using MANY of them on my 20+ installed blogs THE BEST theme you can run on WordPress is Thesis.  It does have a cost, but that means it’s worth it 100k+ people can’t be wrong…

Plugins are what make your WordPress (self-hosted) blog SO POWERFUL!  Here are the plugins that I think are really going to come in handy as we build our MarketingMachine!

  • AddToAny (for sharing)
  • MailChimp (to subscribe to your mailing list)
  • Analytics 360 (to track in Google and MailChimp what is happening)
  • Simple Facebook Connect (to show social proof and get more fans)
  • Flash Video Player (to play self-hosted videos) more in MM #4
  • WPtoTwitter (to syndicate your message)

(There is a good reason I didn’t put links to all of those plugins, because it is SO much better to install them right inside your WordPress blog!)

So if you want to see a trailer for MarketingMachine #1 you can watch that right here, and to get access to the HD version of the show become a QuestioningSuccess Community Member right now!

The Bobby McFerrin Plan for Business

by C. Spencer Reynolds on March 25, 2010

I just read the following blog post over at Copyblogger and had to share, I LOVE IT!  It gave me a new perspective for today…

The Bobby McFerrin Plan for Creating
A More Remarkable Business  by Pamela Wilson

Bobby-McFerrin.jpg

I just returned from a Bobby McFerrin concert, and now I know how to run my new business. No, this post isn’t about “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” Bobby McFerrin is much more than that.

You see, I’m a little nervous. For 23 years, I’ve made my income the same way — in a service business, as a graphic designer. A client comes to me for design work. I create something for them, and bill for my time. Rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat for 23 years, and you have a career as a successful designer.

But that’s all about to change.

I’m venturing into new territory. I’ve started a blog, I’m putting together a course, I’m interacting with my readers. I’m supposed to let them guide me, respond to their needs, offer what they’re looking for, and everything is going to work out fine.

Except I’m just a little terrified. How exactly is this supposed to work? Who are these people I am serving, and how do I know it’s all going to come together?

And that’s where Bobby comes in

The first thing you notice when you file into the theater at a Bobby McFerrin concert is that the stage is almost bare. It’s dark, and a spotlight shines on a single chair in the middle of the stage with a microphone sitting on it. A water bottle is on the floor beside the chair. Nothing more.

You wonder if he’s going to sing by himself, or if he’ll have back up singers. You wonder if he’ll play an instrument. The answer is yes: he does all of these things, but not in the traditional way at all.

He steps into the spotlight

Bobby comes out, sits down, takes a sip of water, and brings the microphone to his mouth. He starts to sing, softly at first, then louder. He begins to hit his chest with his right hand, creating a percussive effect that beats in time to the music. He’s a full-bodied instrument, who makes music with his mouth, hands and feet. He has a four-octave range, and incredible vocal mastery. He’s an American treasure.

Then he turns that spotlight around

The first inkling that this isn’t your everyday concert comes when he asks the audience to participate in a call and response song. He assigns half the room a few notes, and the other half different notes. He does this mid-song, without stopping. We all willingly sing along.

Then he asks if we know “Ave Maria.” We all laugh, and I think this request is going to fall flat. He says “if you know it, sing it out. The people who know it can be the section leaders.”

He begins to sing an accompanying melody, and guess what? The hall fills with the sound of the audience singing “Ave Maria.” It’s beautiful. How did he do that?

The audience volunteers

Bobby pulls his chair over to the edge of the spotlight. He says, “the last time I was in your city was 22 years ago. I want to ask if there are any dancers in the audience. If you’d like to come up and share the stage with me, we’ll improvise together. It might be another 22 years before you get this chance again, so come on up.”

Four people make their way to the stage. Each one takes a turn dancing in the middle of the spotlight, while Bobby, off to one side, improvises music that they respond to with their bodies. It is amazing to watch: each dancer responds in a unique way, but they are all good.

Then he asks if anyone wants to sing with him. No hesitation this time: people are up out of their seats, hustling to the stage. Every singer asks to sing a different song. Bobby’s accompaniment honors their song selection and makes it a work of art. You watch as each singer experiences a moment they’ll always remember.

Give, honor, create together

Tonight was like no other concert I’ve attended. It wasn’t really a concert: it was an experience.

McFerrin wasn’t up on stage to receive our accolades. He was up there to entertain us, but he wanted our voices, our bodies and ourtalents to shine, too. He wanted us to feel like we had created tonight’s concert together.

That’s when I knew that I needed to follow the Bobby McFerrin business model.

His concerts are all improvisation. He doesn’t plan his songs, or even his key changes. He just lets them come to him, based on the audience, his voice, and our response.

What he does plan, I believe, is interaction

He wants to create something with us, not just for us. He listens, responds, adjusts and creates.

That’s what I want to do. It’s my ticket to stop worrying, and my technique for being happy on the vague, uncertain road ahead. Give to my audience, honor their contributions, create something much greater than the sum of all parts. Like Bobby.

How do you involve your audience in your business? Any advice for people who are making the transition from a different business model? Tell us in the comments.

TechTuesday #13 “Facebook Connect”

by C. Spencer Reynolds on March 16, 2010

TechTuesday #13 today we covered “Facebook Connect”.

You may be asking why does it even matter, should I take the time to care about putting this in place on my website?  I say SURE, is it completely necessary NOPE.  It is a nice feature to be able to have Facebook users come to your site, connect to become a fan and leave messages without having to register as a user on your site.

That being said, the process will most likely take you about 45 minutes to get setup from start to finish (shorter if you have already gone through the Facebook Developers setup) and you will have an active piece on your blog that allows interaction!

You are going to start by adding the Simple Facebook Connect plugin to your self-hosted WordPress blog.  Follow the steps that the plugin tells you after you activate it.  You will be given the direct links inside of http://developers.facebook.com and you will enter the API information it gives you upon signup.

You then put the widgets in place on your blog under the Appearance section and VOILA!

Watch the HD version of the show for the click by click visual walk through.

Monday Matters “You’re the ONLY one…”

by C. Spencer Reynolds on March 15, 2010

Have you ever thought, “What if I’m the ONLY one who is going to do this?”  Amazingly you normally just do it and get on with life.  Interesting thing happens when you have other people that could ‘possibly’ be done by ‘someone’ else, you can easily walk right by and never think about doing it again.  Then those things pile up and can become overwhelming.  So try this thought on today, “What if I’m the ONLY one who is going to do this?” and see what you get done…
